I don’t know how many of you are aware of this heritage place in
central Delhi. I have never been to this place, I heard the news of its closure
in 2017 still I wasn’t able to go there and I wasn’t even aware of its history
before this news. So closure of this place made me curious and I asked my
father about this place and he told me few things.
This theatre was built in 1932 and it was one of the biggest theaters in New Delhi and was the first building in the area. It was single
screen cinema hall. During its initial times it had 3 floors but in 1996 above
2 floors were sold to Madame Tussaud's to open wax museum in the building.
The
theatre was designed by an English architect
Walter Sykes George blended many Mughal influences along with palm trees that
lined the entrance. My father told me that it was a costly cinema during that
time and he has also never been there.
When the owner decided to shut it down, he decided to open
multiplex in the place of the cinema. The last day of this cinema was 30th
March 2017 and films like “Mera naam joker” and “Sangam” were screened.
The cinema is pride of Delhi’s cinemas and these kind of things
define the heritage very well.
